Position Summary
Erie Township is seeking letters of interest and resumes to fill the vacancy of Erie Township Treasurer, appointed individual will fill the vacancy of Erie Township Treasurer for the remainder of the unexpired term. The Township Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the township, including the collection, receipt, safeguarding, and disbursement of township funds in accordance with Michigan law and township policies. The Treasurer ensures accurate financial records, timely tax collection, and compliance with state reporting requirements while providing excellent customer service to residents and businesses.

Statutory Duties

  • Must appoint a deputy
  • Must post a surety bond and tax collection surety bond
  • Collects real and personal property taxes for township as well as other tax-levying entities
  • Collects delinquent personal property tax
  • Responsible for jeopardy assessments in collecting delinquent personal property tax
  • Collects mobile home specific tax
  • Keeps an account of township receipts; revenues and expenditures
  • Prepares some financial reports, including at least monthly “cash activity by fund and bank account”, and investments reports
  • Issues all township checks/payments
  • Receives and deposits all township revenues and payments in approved depositories
  • Able to designate others to receive and receipt for all monies coming into the township
  • Invests township funds in approved investment vehicles as directed by the township board in investment policy and depository resolution
  • Township “department head” for tax collecting and other receipt of funds (budgeting and preparation of equipment, software, training, internal staffing, etc.)
  • Maintains records of the treasurer’s office
  • Member of the township board
  • Member of township election commission

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with development and monitoring of the township budget.
  • Ensure compliance with Michigan General Law Township statutes, accounting standards, and auditing requirements.
  • Coordinate annual audits and provide requested financial documentation.
  • Respond to resident inquiries regarding taxes, assessments, and financial matters.
  • Oversee or assist with administration of township pension, insurance, and employee benefit payments.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Township Board.

Qualifications

  • Resident of Erie Township
  • Registered elector of Erie Township
  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, public administration, or related field preferred.
  • Previous experience in municipal finance, accounting, bookkeeping, or public administration preferred.
  • Knowledge of Michigan township operations, tax collection procedures, and governmental accounting principles.
  • Proficiency in financial software, spreadsheets, and office applications.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information.
  • Ability to interpret and apply state and local laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Experience with BS&A or other municipal financial software preferred.
